Can You Live in a Static Caravan?

If you’ve ever spent time in one of our beautiful parks across North Wales, Mid Wales, Cheshire or North Yorkshire, you’ll know how easy it is to fall in love with the lifestyle. The peaceful surroundings, the sense of community, the fresh air — it’s no wonder many of our holiday homeowners say, “I wish I could stay here all year round!”

But here’s a common question we get asked:
Can you live in a static caravan?

Let’s explore that in more detail…

Holiday Homes vs Residential Living

At Thornley Leisure Parks, all of our parks are classed as holiday parks — not residential sites. That means our parks are designed for short breaks, weekend getaways, and extended holidays — not for permanent residence.

While you can enjoy your static caravan as often as you like during the open season (many of our parks offer generous 10.5s), you cannot live in it full-time.

This is not a rule we’ve made up — it’s a legal and planning requirement. Local councils grant us licences to operate as holiday parks, and those licences specifically prevent people from using caravans as their primary or only home.

Why Does It Matter?

Residential restrictions are in place to make sure holiday parks retain their peaceful, seasonal feel — something our owners truly value. It helps us create safe, well-maintained spaces for relaxation and leisure, not the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Plus, living full-time in a caravan that isn’t designed for year-round habitation can present challenges — from insulation and heating to postal services and access to healthcare.

What You Can Do

While you can’t live permanently on our parks, you can:

  • Use your holiday home as a base for regular escapes
  • Spend long weekends, summer holidays, and festive breaks here
  • Invite friends and family to visit and share the experience
  • Enjoy all the on-park facilities — from cafés and bars to swimming pools and entertainment

Our holiday home owners get the very best of both worlds: a familiar, cosy retreat whenever they need it, without the responsibilities or restrictions of full-time living.

A Home from Home (Without the Council Tax!)

The joy of owning a static caravan at Thornley Leisure Parks is that it offers all the comfort of a second home — without the overheads or formality of bricks and mortar.

You’ll still have your main home for day-to-day life, but your holiday home will be ready and waiting whenever you fancy a break.
