Prepare your Holiday Home for Winter
As the colder months draw in, caravan owners face an important task: winterising their caravan. Whether you’re storing your van for a few weeks or until spring, taking the time to prepare it for winter can save you from expensive repairs and a whole lot of hassle later on.
Here’s why winterising matters—and how to do it properly.

Why Winterising Your Caravan is Important
Cold weather can wreak havoc on caravans if they’re not properly prepared. Here are a few reasons why winterising is essential:
- Prevent frozen and burst pipes: Water left in the system can freeze, expand, and crack pipes or fittings.
- Avoid damp and mould: Poor ventilation and leftover moisture create ideal conditions for mould and mildew.
- Protect the appliances: Make sure they are turned off during the Winter.
- Save money in the long run: Small preventative steps now can avoid costly repairs or replacements come spring.

Clean Thoroughly and Dispose of Food
- Remove all food, clean the fridge, and leave the fridge door ajar to prevent smells.
- Vacuum carpets, wipe down surfaces, and clean cupboards to discourage pests.
Once foods have been disposed of, it is useful to give cupboards a good clean. Also ensure that you empty and clean your fridge freezer and leave it turned off with the door left open.

Remove Valuable Items, Store Soft Furnishings
- Take out cushions, bedding, and curtains if possible, and store them in a dry place.
- If you leave them in, prop them up to allow airflow.
You can print and use our ‘Valuables Removed’ Poster to pop in the window of your caravan when it’s not in use.

Cover Upholstery
With the curtains being left open it is important to ensure that all upholstery that is in direct sunlight is suitably covered to prevent sun damage and fading.
Direct sunlight can age the appearance of furniture in a caravan rapidly and this is something you will not want to have to replace when you come to reopen your holiday caravan in the spring.

Prevent Damp
A couple of bowls of salt strategically placed around your caravan (especially in dark places) will absorb any moisture that on cold days can lead to damp and mould.
